Senior Photonic Engineer

About Microgrid. Tech:
Microgrid. Tech is pioneering off-grid energy and modular, H2-powered mobile data centers. Our focus is on solar PV, advanced storage, and EV charging systems, with rapid innovation in photonic chips and laser integration to revolutionize data center efficiency. We are expanding into fuel cell solutions and proprietary photonic technology with patented systems destined for high-volume production.

Job Description:
We are seeking a Senior Photonic Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of advanced photonic stacks for our next-generation DC-native systems. This role will focus on leveraging optics, waveguides, and laser technology to maximize fuel cell data center efficiency and enable scalable, robust product architectures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop high-performance photonic stacks for integration with fuel cells and advanced storage systems.
  • Engineer laser-based monitoring systems for hydrogen flow and optimize their interface with high-voltage (480V) bus controls.
  • Lead prototyping and simulation efforts, drive rapid validation cycles, and collaborate with robotics and production teams.
  • Scale production processes for photonic hardware, aiming for efficient ramp-up from pilot to large-scale manufacturing.
  • Support the transition from prototype to high-volume deployment (target: 100 units Year 1, 1,000+ units annually).
  • Drive continuous improvement and integration of AI agents and automation to augment human talent in production.
  • Collaborate deeply with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, applications engineering) to ensure the highest efficiency and reliability in photonic system deployment.
  • Contribute to talent acquisition, mentorship of junior staff, and partnership building across the optics/photonics industry.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Photonics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and proven practical experience in photonics system design and development.
  • Hands-on expertise with optical waveguides, lasers, fuel cell integration, rapid prototyping, and high-voltage systems.
  • Strong background in product development, prototyping, simulation tools, and scaling hardware production.
  • Project leadership, industry networking, and a passion for building and innovating at scale.

Benefits:

Competitive salary ($150k+), equity options, and early influence on a fast-scaling energy-tech startup.
